Matterhorn Triangular Focus

Description

Before anyone tells me that the top of this peak isn't clearly in focus, yes, I know. I was intentionally focusing on the tip of the triangular face at the base of this photo. It's just such an amazing sight, this, and I never tire of it. I had about 5-10 minutes max to photograph this as the mist that you see rises out of the valley at around 7:15 a.m. and is like a veil that then covered everything, including the peak, for the rest of the day. The first two days there, I didn't get up in time to set up the camera before I could actually shoot.

Oh yes, this peak is definitely climbable and has been for 150 years or more. It's also been the scene of many, many climbing tragedies--they just finally found the body of Whymper not so long ago (it was frozen for a very long time.) Check out the link a couple of messages below for more info and to see the various climbing routes. You are looking here at the Hornligrat route--the ridge that goes up the "left" side of the triangle and then more or less straight up. It's a 12-14 hour round trip for experienced climber is all goes well and according to plan. Not my idea of a good time, frankly. And this is the "easiest" and classic route. But that does not mean easy by any means :-)
